The middle-class squeeze

What a middle-class household pays in — income tax at the top, GST on nearly everything it buys — and what the market and the concentration economy hand back: the record on retail trading, valuation, ownership, and the proceedings that trail them.

From six AAI airports in 2019 to eight operated by end-2025, including Mumbai's two — the footprint expanded through further acquisition and a new greenfield airport. The Finance Ministry flagged that no bidder should get more than two airports on financial-risk grounds, and NITI Aayog cautioned on technical capacity; the award of all six to a single group proceeded. The statistical-independence dispute of 2019 — two National Statistical Commission members resigned over data release and the back-series — bookends the ministry's February 2026 shift to a new 2022-23 GDP base year.In the same Acharya computation, the Big-5's rise from 10% to nearly 18% of non-financial assets mirrors the next-five groups' fall from 18% to under 9% — concentration at the very top.China grants a standard 60,000-yuan annual deduction plus named allowances for education, housing and elderly care; India's comparator is the slab thresholds themselves — the figures use each country's own latest rules. One of the Big-5 groups in the concentration data is the same group that won all six airports in the 2019 privatisation — the academic aggregate beside one documented award.Days after the US indictment, which Adani denies, Kenya's president cancelled airport and power deals, citing information from investigative agencies and partner nations; Adani said it would pursue legal recourse. The domestic clearance stands alongside a separate foreign matter — the US indictment of November 2024, which Adani denies as "baseless" and which is an unproven charge, not a conviction. Two SEBI studies over different periods — 93% of individual F&O traders lost money across FY22-FY24, and over 91% in FY25, when aggregate net losses rose to Rs 1.06 lakh crore.India ranked fourth-largest by nominal GDP on an IMF projection, while its market capitalisation was cited near 138% of GDP at end-2025, above its long-run average — two distinct measures, each shifting over time. The same year the valuation ratio ran above its long-run average, foreign portfolio investors recorded their largest annual equity outflow on record — both figures vary by source and cut-off date. The size-ranking milestone sits beside a measurement debate — a former chief economic adviser's 2019 paper argued growth was overstated by about 2.5 points a year after the 2011-12 methodology change, a claim the government's advisory council rebutted.Few pay income tax, but the consumption-tax layer reaches everyone — GST applies to purchases regardless of whether the buyer files a return. The same 22 September 2025 restructuring that set the 5/18/40% slabs also cut GST on individual life and health insurance from 18% to nil, while group policies stayed at 18%.An interested short-seller's allegations — which Adani rejects and which remain unproven — preceded a fall of more than USD 100 billion in Adani-linked market value; the market reaction is a fact, the allegations are not findings. The same equity-derivatives market where SEBI found most individual traders lost money is the one where its July 2025 interim order alleged large expiry-day gains by one firm; Jane Street disputes the findings, which remain unproven and are under appeal. From the interim order and impoundment to the escrow deposit fifteen days later — the ban was lifted but the firm had not resumed the flagged trades, and the appeal remained pending before the Securities Appellate Tribunal.Scale of assets against scale of direct employment — one IT firm reported about 584,519 staff (March 2026), while the diversified Adani Group reported roughly 36,000; the figures are measured at different dates and the Adani number is self-published and varies.Manufacturing's GDP share drifted to about 15.9% rather than toward the 25% target, while the goods trade deficit stood at USD 282.8 billion in FY2024-25 on imports of USD 720 billion. The ports business handling roughly a quarter of India's cargo is the same entity Norway's wealth fund excluded in May 2024 on conflict-rights-risk grounds — a divestment decision, not a finding of illegality. The Supreme Court kept the probe with SEBI in January 2024; SEBI then closed its proceedings in September 2025, finding the manipulation allegations could not be established and imposing no penalty. The top income-tax slabs sit above Rs 24 lakh, while only 6.68% of the population filed a return at all in FY24 and 4.9 crore filers declared zero taxable income — a narrow base carrying the direct-tax layer.Where the largest single ministry share goes — defence received Rs 6.81 lakh crore, 13.45% of the 2025-26 Union Budget, the highest of any ministry. The other side of the tax ledger — public education expenditure was about 2.7% of GDP (2023-24), against the National Education Policy's 6% goal. What the top rate takes against what the state spends on health — a top effective income-tax rate of 42.744% alongside government health expenditure of about 1.9% of GDP (FY22).Two coexisting regimes for the same year — the old regime's top effective rate of 42.744% against the new regime's roughly 39%, with the 30% slab starting at Rs 10 lakh versus Rs 24 lakh.A market capitalisation cited near 138% of GDP at end-2025, above its long-run average, alongside the regulator's own March 2024 warning of "froth" in small- and mid-cap segments; both are point-in-time and move over time.Leads into: Education: the pipelineLeads into: What is actually killing usLeads into: What is actually killing usLeads into: What is actually killing usNewOld regime top effective perso…2025-02-01NewNew regime 30% rate applies ab…2025-02-01New6.68% of India's population fi…2024-12-17NewGST restructured to 5%, 18% an…2025-09-03NewGST on individual life and hea…2025-09-03NewGovernment health expenditure…2025-01-31NewEducation expenditure was abou…2025-01-31NewDefence allocated Rs 6.81 lakh…2025-02-01NewChina grants a standard annual…2024-01-01NewSEBI found 93% of individual F…2024-09-23NewOver 91% of F&O traders lost m…2025-07-07NewSEBI barred Jane Street and im…2025-07-03NewSEBI lifted the trading ban af…2025-07-18NewIndia's market-cap-to-GDP rati…2025-12-31NewFPIs pulled a record about Rs…2025-12-14NewSEBI chief flagged froth in sm…2024-03-11NewBig-5 conglomerates' asset sha…2023-03-30NewNext-five groups' asset share…2023-03-30NewAdani awarded all six AAI airp…2019-02-25NewFinance Ministry and NITI Aayo…2020-08-31NewAdani operates eight Indian ai…2025-12-25NewAPSEZ handled roughly 27% of I…2025-07-01NewAdani acquired Holcim's Ambuja…2022-09-16NewAdani-led consortium won Israe…2022-07-14NewTCS reported about 584,519 emp…2026-03-31NewAdani Group reported roughly 3…2024-12-31NewHindenburg published a short-s…2023-01-24NewAdani-linked securities lost o…2023-02-28NewSupreme Court declined to tran…2024-01-03NewSEBI closed its Adani-Hindenbu…2025-09-18NewUS DOJ indicted Gautam Adani a…2024-11-20NewNorway's wealth fund excluded…2024-05-15NewKenya's president cancelled Ad…2024-11-21NewManufacturing GDP share was ab…2024-03-31NewIndia's goods trade deficit wa…2025-03-31NewIMF outlook showed India passi…2025-05-24NewFormer chief economic adviser'…2019-06-11NewStatistics ministry released a…2026-02-27NewTwo statistical commission mem…2019-01-29
